Ida Mae Stone Clayton (1867-1932)

I am related to Ida Mae Stone born Gold Run, Calif. Feb. 16, 1867.  Ida’s mother Annis Melvina Mallory is the sister of my great-great-grandfather Augustus H. Mallory and they are the children of Allen Horace Mallory Sr.  Annis was the first white child born in an area of Mallory Twp. Clayton County Iowa.

Annis went to the California gold rush in 1862 by ship with her sister Mary, and some of her brothers.  Annis married Joel Atherton Stone in California and they lived in Gold Run, California.  They have a little child Cora Annis Stone buried in the Gold Run Cemetery.

When they banned Hydraulic mining in California, Joel went to Johannesburg South Africa where he was a supt. in a diamond mine.  Annis, daughter Ida, and the other children Alice, and Charles in about 1886 went to South Africa.

Ida married Harry Clayton May 22, 1890 in Johannesburg, and they lived in South Africa where Ida continued to paint.  Harry was born March 13, 1864 in England.

In 1913 Ida Clayton and her mother Annis visited the Iowa farm where Annis grew up, then they went to the Western U.S. to visit family and friends and then returned to South Africa.

She died in Nylstroom, South Africa on May 27, 1932.
