Biography from AskART:
Born in Oregon, IL on Nov. 7, 1902. Johnson studied at the AIC and with Andre Lhote in Paris. He taught at the Minneapolis School of Art from 1938-45 and then moved to California to teach at San Jose State College. He died there on Nov. 2, 1963. Exh: AIC, 1928 (gold medal), 1931; Swedish Club (Chicago), 1929 (prize); CGA, 1928, 1930, 1937; PAFA, 1929, 1937; NAD, 1936; Minneapolis Inst. of Art, 1938-44; GGIE, 1939; Nat’l Gallery (Canada), 1940; Minnesota State Fair, 1941-44 (prize); SFMA, 1946. In: AIC; Toledo (OH) Museum; Minneapolis Inst. of Art; Univ. of Chicago; Field Museum; IBM.
