Biography provided by Lisa Pierce Breunig, Living in Stamford, (Managing Editor and author), February/March 2001 issue. Selected quotes:

Jackson finds inspiration in her surroundings, including her home with its small, well-lighted studio that affords the painter a view of the [Long Island] Sound as she gazes past her easel.

"I love New England," she says. I could just paint Stamford and the surrounding area, the beautiful parks, the harbor. The view from my house is a constant source of inspiration to me."

Another is her Silvermine Guild teacher and mentor, George Passantino Like Passantino, Jackson hopes to build on her growing reputation as a portrait artist many of her clients are looking to gain some of the traditionalism a portrait can add to a home.

While Jackson's style is classical, her route to becoming an artist is not. In the late 1970's, she studied medicine in Florence, Italy and for a brief time considered a career as a medical illustrator. After leaving medical school, she remained in Florence, where she worked for several leading Italian jewelry manufacturers, modifying designs and marketing them for the tastes of American women. In the United States, she worked in marketing and design.

All the while, she continued to paint and occasionally found time to produce commissioned landscapes and still-life paintings. After she married and moved to Stamford in 1998, she finally was able to devote herself full time to painting  Last year she co-founded the Sound Waters Tall Ships Ball Juried Art Auction and led local students in SoundWaters' Arts to Life program.

Living in Florida during the winter, and Connecticut during the summer, Jackson continues to work on landscape and portrait painting, and sees a continuity and connection in these dual disciplines. Character, she notes, is part of context, which is why she strives for an Impressionist-inspired emotionalism in her portraits, rather than photographic realism.

"People, like landscapes, stand up to the elements and are sculpted by them. Wind, water, heat and cold leave their mark as do emotions," she says. "Shifting shorelines, facial laugh lines, sloping hills, rounded shoulders - all these make up where we are and who we are."
