This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Jeffrey Catherine Jones (born Jeffrey Durwood Jones, January 10, 1944 - May 19, 2011)

Science fiction illustrator and landscape painter Jeffrey Jones was born in Atlanta, Georgia, January 10, 1944.  He was in love with art from childhood, though he studied geology in college at Georgia Tech.  He was raised in a seemingly eccentric, magnolia-clogged Southern environment that must have contributed to his imagination and intense fantasy life.

As a six-year-old in 1951, Jones discovered comic books and fell in love with them.  He describes how he "peered way up at a circular comic rack in a drug store and spied Kubert's TOR 3D comic. I had no idea there was a Kubert back then, but I know that I suddenly wanted to draw comics, to create heroes Comics are 'real art' to me. The combination of words and pictures is a literal, vastly unexplored territory."

In 1964, he drew comics for fanzines; in 1966 his first paid job was for Witzend. When in New York, he drew for Last Gasp Comics, SCREW Magazine, and The East Village Other.  He married his college sweetheart, Mary Louise Alexander, in 1966, while living in Georgia, where he attended Georgia Tech; in 1967 he moved to New York City, where their daughter was born.

In New York City he did work for the new black and white comic magazines including "Creepy and Eerie", "Gold Key" and some science-fiction digests, as well as covers for gothic romances, romantic adventures and series like "Nick Carter".  In 1972, Jones began his comic, "Idyl", which appeared in National Lampoon until August 1975.  Jones founded the Studio in that same year with Berni Wrightson, Barry Windsor-Smith and Michael Kaluta, where they hoped to pursue their individual work in an atmosphere of creativity.

In 1979, Dragon's Dream published the book, The Studio, which was devoted to the group's work.  Jones' book covers were reproduced in Yesterday's Lily (Dragon's Dream, 1980); his drawings in The Drawings of Jeffrey Jones (Cygnus, 1982); and romantic works in Age of Innocence (Underwood Books, 1994).

One of the images from Jones' work on the 1998 Tarzan Calendar, "Tarzan Rescues the Moon", won the Gold Medal in Spectrum Five's juried competition.

A book, The Art of Jeffrey Jones, by Arnie Fenner and Cathy Fenner, was published in 2002.

Beginning in 1998, Jones, after years of consideration, pursued sex reassignment surgery and began to live as a woman.  From then on, she was known as Jeffrey Catherine Jones. Her studio was in the Catskill Mountains, where she painted local landscapes.

Jeffrey Catherine Jones died May 19, 2011.
