| Son of actor-painter Joseph Jefferson II, Joseph Jefferson, III was a
theatre scenery and sign painter. He went West in 1839, after
acting, managing, and painting for a number of eastern theaters in the
1820s and 1830s. He worked in Illinois in Chicago and
Springfield; Memphis, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Mobile,
Alabama.
When the theatrical business was slow, he painted signs and ornamental work.
In Philadelphia, he learned is trade with Robert Coyle, an English scene painter.
