Biography from Nova Gallery of Fine Art:
Kenneth Johnson, a native Texan, transitioned from a career in aerospace engineering to a California sculptor.  Early in his development, he was home schooled in the related arts by his mother, an accomplished artist and high school art teacher, and by his father, a skilled craftsman of wood, iron and stone.

Johnson’s artistic endeavors, however, were temporarily diverted by careers as an Air Force officer, and space systems engineer and manager.  Following his passion, he returned to art as a student of sculpture, and a community college art instructional aid.

Johnson is one of the few sculptors who still cast his own original bronze pieces, meticulously completing each step of the “lost wax” bronze casting process.  He integrates bronze, stone and wood textures that gives his work and earthy, organic quality.  His art explores a broad range of traditional, representative, and abstract forms with subjects ranging from structural shapes to the human body and elements of nature and animals.

Johnson’s home and studio are in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos, California.

Artist’s Statement

The act of creating something of beauty or energy with your own hands is a magnificent experience.  I am drawn to working in bronze because of its enduring quality.  In return for this opportunity there is an obligation to add value to our environment.  What better way than to create a work in bronze that touches our emotions?  I strive to capture energy and beauty in my sculptures.

I admire and I am inspired by the work of Auguste Rodin, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Frederic Remington, Benny Bufano and the contemporary figurative work of Richard MacDonald.

I expect the viewer to imagine and connect with the piece as they see it, not necessarily as I envisioned it. In this way I learn.  As a foundation to my art, I believe in quality of craftsmanship consistent with the enduring quality of bronze.
