Biography from AskART:
| Wildlife painter Lars Jonsson, specializing in oils and watercolors of
birds, was born in Sweden in 1952. His art career started early,
when he exhibited, at age fifteen, at the National Museum of Natural
History in Stockholm. His work, influenced by Louis Agassiz
Fuertes, Bruno Liljefors, and Paul Robert, is exhibited in Sweden and
England, as well as North America, including the "Birds in Art"
exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin,
which, in 1988, named him a "Master Artist." He exhibited there
in 2001, as well. In 1995, he exhibited at the Art Museum of
Gotland, Sweden.
Jonsson became well known when he began to
publish his field guides to birds in the 1970s, which now total
seven. He has written two books on the wildlife of the island of
Gotland where he lives. His Bird in Nature appeared in 1976; Bird Island in 1983; Birds of Europe with North Africa and the Middle East in 1992; and Birds and Light,
an autobiographical discussion of his techniques, in 2002. The
latter received the Worldtwitch 2002 Best Bird Art Book award.
