Biography from Schiller & Bodo European Paintings:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Louis-Aime Japy was a talented artist who painted nature with a great deal of sensitivity.  He visited Italy at the beginning of his career and while he made Italy the subject of many paintings, the majority of his works are of the French countryside, particularly the Jura and Doubs in the Franche-Comté region.

Japy was a student of Français and Corot.  He debuted at the Salon of 1864, and was made a Societaire des Artistes Français in 1883.  He was awarded a medal in 1870, a second class medal in 1873, and silver medals at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles.  In 1906 he was made a Chevalier at the Legion d’Honneur confirming the high regard in which he was held in his lifetime.

Biography from Anderson Galleries, Inc.:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

A student of Francois Louis Francais and of Camille Corot, Louis-Aime Japy made his Salon debut in 1864, during the height of the Barbizon painting movement.  He made trips to Italy early in his career, as was customary for a young artist, but it was the regions of his native Doubs and the Jura that most captured his heart: these regions inspired most of his compositions.

Japy exhibited his views of the French countryside regularly at the Salon, medalling in 1870, and earning a second metal in 1873 and gold metals at both of the Expositions Universelles in 1889 and 1900.  In 1883 he was made a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais, earning him exemption from all future Salon jury selection and the ability to exhibit freely at the Salons.  He was recognized again in 1906, when he was elected Chevalier of the Legion d' Honneur.
