This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is from Jerry Smith an employee of John Morrell and Company in Sioux Falls, Iowa. He obtained this information from a 1956 "Morrell Magazine" that has an article on the 12 national parks to be featured in the company's 1957 calendar. The article claims "the 12 paintings were done by M. Martin Johnson, internationally known painter, who travelled from park to park making sketches and color studies from which he made his finished paintings."

The writer of the article also explains that Johnson was born in Rockford, Illinois, and established a studio in Northfield, Illinois. He attended grade schools in Davenport and Des Moines, Iowa and Racine, Wisconsin and graduated from high school in Milwaukee. "He had no formal art training, except a year's study with Gyorgy Kepes. Johnson has been commissioned by over 150 of the leading corporations in the country for advertising and fine art. His work has been reproduced in most of the leading national graphic arts publications..."

50 years ago the Crippled Children's Home in Sioux Falls had been
given two sets of originals for calenders by John Morrell. They had been
gathering dust for a long time. The Director of the Crippled Children's Home
in Sioux Falls and our company president were consecutive presidents of the city's Chamber of Commerce. Our president had all reframed and matted. And in 2001, the administrator of the Children's Home returned the M. Martin Johnson paintings of the national parks to John Morrell.
According to "Who's Who in American Art" by Peter Falk, M Martin Johnson was a member of the Society of Typographic Artists, the Chicago Art Guild, and "27" Chicago Designers. He exhibited with these groups and from 1940 to 1951 with the Art Institute of Chicago.
