This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Nancy A. Johnson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 5, 1920.  Johnson moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1939 and settled in Carmel.  Later she moved to San Jose where she graduated from San Jose State University with a teaching credential in Art.  She also studied at Hartnell Junior College where she was tutored and influenced by Leon Amyx who encouraged her to pursue a career in watercolor painting.

After a year of teaching in Contra Costa County, she returned to her Carmel home and opened a studio workshop where she designed her own screen-printed greeting cards. She sold these cards locally and nationally.  For a time she was the owner/operator of Nancy's Artists' Palette and Gallery in Carmel.

Nancy Johnson was on the Founding Board of Directors for the Monterey Museum of Art in 1959.  Her works were included in several exhibits in that venue over the years.  In 1963 she taught watercolor classes and outdoor sketching at the Carmel Adult School. She also taught classes at the Carmel Foundation and Hacienda Carmel.  She also led painting expeditions to Portugal, Switzerland, and other European locales.

In 1965 she became an Artist Member of the prestigious Carmel Art Association.  During her years of membership she served on the Board of Directors in 1970-71, 73, 81-82, 84-85, and 1988.  Her works were exhibited on the Monterey Peninsula at the Carmel Art Association, Beeches Little Picture Gallery in Carmel, and at the Valley Hills Gallery.

Johnson spent time studying with well known California Style watercolorists Eliot O'Hara, George Post, Rex Brandt, Edgar Whitney, and Richard Yip.  She was heavily influenced by the works of Armin Hansen and Sophie Harpe.  Their influence is seen in her well-executed works.  She exhibited widely on the Monterey Peninsula and in Northern California.

Nancy A. Johnson died in Monterey on November 13, 2001.
