Biography from McBride Gallery:
| Maryland artist, R. Benjamin Jones studied at the Maryland Institute of
Fine Arts in Baltimore, the University of Maryland and Pittsburgh
Theological Seminary. He is an accomplished painter, portraying
scenes of rural Maryland that few have experienced.
R.
Benjamin Jones paints in acrylic on paper or panel. He exhibits
his work in galleries in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maryland.
He has had museum shows at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in
Norwalk, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Hurlbutt Museum in
Greenwich. His work is in the permanent collection of the
Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, Maryland, and his
paintings went on a four-year tour with a special exhibit for the
Smithsonian from 1981-1984.
R. Benjamin Jones has been a
resident of Washington County, Maryland for the past 30 years.
During that time he has achieved recognition as one of the most active
realist painters of the rural landscape, Amish farm life and the lives
of the Chesapeake waterman. He contributes to his community in
service as a Presbyterian pastor of a small church and he and his wife
Becky regularly donate time and talent to benefit community
institutions.
Painting full time since 1979, Ben paints a
variety of subject matter. He paints the Amish of Lancaster
County with the quiet dignity that they themselves possess. He
has painted the Chesapeake Bay waterman, their skipjacks and
oysterboats that ply the waters of the Bay. For many of his
collectors, to experience a Jones painting, is to experience rural life
in Maryland. He paints the rural farm animals, work horses, pigs,
sheep and cows, frequently attending the Amish spring auctions where he
can observe the families as they conduct farm business: buying seed,
trading farm animals, selling handmade quilts. He paints Brown
Swiss cows with such detail and richness of color that it draws the
viewer to appreciate these 'cow portraits' for their unique beauty. Ben
also loves gardens and loves painting them both on Cape Cod as well as
his own roses, Tiffany roses, which is a particular favorite.
This versatile, sensitive, gifted artist has his work in numerous private and corporate collections.
