Biography from Pitzer's Fine Arts:
Rusty Jones, Artist
Plein Air artist Rusty Jones is Texas artist born in 1953.  En plein aire is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which has become his love and focus.  Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important, and this method now has captured this son of Texas who worked as a medical illustrator for over twenty years. After obtaining a Masters Degree in Medical Illustration, he illustrated countless medical and pharmaceutical ad campaigns, medical journals, college textbooks and more. Like unlike many other fine art artists that preceded him, learning to meet deadlines and to draw countless hours equipped him with a solid foundation to move into the fine art field.
Rusty’s love of sports then led him into sporting art which landed him illustration assignments with such notable magazines as Golf Illustrated, Golf Magazine, the Golf Journal and American Way Magazine.  He further provided sports art for the Coca Cola Foods Division for the Summer Olympics, the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Mavericks.
Today he almost exclusively pursues the landscape from the Big Sur coastline of California, to the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, to the diverse environments of Big Bend, New Mexico, Arizona and beyond.

Unlike some of the artists that influenced his development such as Scott Christensen, Edgar Payne, Richard Schmid and others, he is totally captured by the impact of natural light on location. He has stated “Painting outdoors take passion.  Without it the wind, head, snow and bugs would drive you indoors!”
Now offering and sharing his acquired skills, Rusty often teaches workshops around the country.  He says: “Every painter can learn to paint better by dedicating himself to learning how to paint by studying with others and by painting outdoors often and by intense practice sessions in the studio. There is no short cut. But along the way you learn the pure joy that comes from applying paint to canvas and capturing essence of the landscape being painted.”
Jones is a member of the Outdoor Painters Society and Oil Painters of America.

Biography from Pearce Collections Museum:
This Texas-born artist, raised in the Hill Country area, traces his earliest influences in art to his grandmother.  He vividly remembers the smell of her studio. She was the first to put a paintbrush in his hands and encourage his interest in art. Of her, he said: "She had a crusty personality and a toughened exterior, but when she sat down to paint, a calm came over her and I could see the joy in her face as paint fell from her brush to the canvas."

Rusty studied fine art at the University of Texas and obtained a Masters Degree in Medical Illustration. He had a keen interest in combining science and art through his illustrations. For over twenty years, Rusty has illustrated hundreds of articles for medical journals and textbooks. He has also provided illustrations for pharmaceutical ad campaigns, patient education programs, college textbooks, legal exhibits and medical products instructional texts.

At the same time Rusty developed a commercial illustration career featuring his love for sports. His sports art has been commissioned by private collectors, magazines, ad agencies and Fortune 500 companies. He has provided art for the United States Golf Association, Golf Illustrated Magazine, Augusta National Golf Club, American Way Magazine, The Coca-Cola Foods Division, the Dallas Mavericks NBA team, the Dallas Cowboys NFL team and many other notable clients.

Now Rusty Jones pursues the American landscape. His influences include Carl Runguis, Scott Christensen, Matt Smith, Edgar Payne, Clyde Aspevig, James Reynolds and Richard Schmid. Jones has studied with contemporary landscape painters Scott Christensen, Matt Smith, Don Ward and Joseph Mendez at the Fredericksburg Artist School.
