| Born in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, CA on Sept. 3, 1876. Joseph lived most of his life in his native city. During 1893-95 he studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. After his marriage in Santa Barbara in 1906, he worked in London, England until 1918 and in 1926 studied at the Beaux Arts in Paris and in Rome. In 1930 he returned to San Francisco where he illustrated for the Chronicle and fulfilled local portrait commissions.
