Alexander Kanoldt was born on 29/09/1881 in Karlsruhe - died on 01.24.1939 in Berlin. German painter and lithographer. Son of the painter Edmund Kanoldt. One of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit. In 1901 he began his studies in the class character of Ernst Schurth at the Academy in Karlsruhe, from 1906 master student of Friedrich Fehr. Here he met, among others Adolf Erbsloh and Hugo Troendle, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship links. In 1908 he moved to Munich, where he was a year later the "New Artists' Association of Munich" co-founded. This grouping is today regarded as the pioneer of the "Blue Rider". The works of the French Cubists, whom he meets on the exhibition, affect him long term and there are a number of typographical very elaborate color lithographs. In 1913 he co-founded the New Secession. 1914-18 he does as an officer in military service and was awarded the Iron Cross. During a stay in Italy in 1924 created multi-perspective architectural landscapes and serene interiors. These works mark a new beginning is in his work and let him in 1925 in the exhibition "New Objectivity" participate in the Kunsthalle Mannheim, where he is represented beside Beckmann with the largest group of works. Oscar Moll appointed him in 1925 at the Breslau Academy of Art, but he leaves again in 1931. Then move to Garmisch, where he opened a private art school. In 1932 he joined the Munich artist group "The Seven" and participated in their exhibitions. Receives the 1933 Albrecht Durer price and is a founding member of the "Badische Secession". Although he was appointed in 1933 as professor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, his works under the Nazi regime deemed "degenerate" and confiscated in 1937. Faced with a dramatically changing world, the uncertainty of the Weimar Republic and also in response to the fragmentation of reality through abstraction he gives his vases, bottles, books, boxes and rubber trees, a solidity, which may be called magical, and at the same time in their intense colors and stillness inherent in an almost dreamlike unreality.
