Kanas graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1948, having studied painting with O. Argyros and E. Thomopoulos, and engraving with G. Kefallinos. During the Nazi occupation he took active part in the National Resistance and was stigmatized for his paintings that he exhibited at the Professional Exhibition of 1943. His favorite themes were seascapes, ships, battles, and views of ports.
