| Born on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay on Feb. 2, 1869. King grew up in San Francisco and at age 14 moved with his family to Michigan. There he designed, built and drove Detroit's first automobile in 1896. The car was a four-cylinder gasoline engine. He said, "They wouldn't let me go over five miles per hour. Figured that it was too dangerous." He assisted his close friend Henry Ford in constructing his first car and was the holder of 644 patents on automobile parts and engines.
