This mysterious figure was said to have been a famous French artist who left his native land for some unknown reason and brought a beautiful French woman with him to the U.S. Upon arrival, he changed his name to Charles Koster. Learning of the mining boom in Nevada, the couple moved to Virginia City in the late 1880s. An alcoholic and unwilling to work, Koster put the mademoiselle to work and they lived on her income.
