Kokkinidis was born in Piraeus in 1929. In 1952 he abandoned his studies at what was then the School of Economic Sciences and became a student at the Athens School of Fine Arts until 1958. From 1959 to 1961 he was in charge of the art section of the newly-established Hellenic Handicrafts Organization and assisted in the design and morphological orientation of folk production and craft industry, after a short period of training in Italy.
