Biography from Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery:
Edmund M. Kopietz
(1900-1988)

Edmond M. Kopietz was a charter member of the Prairie Print Makers Society. He did not live in Kansas at the time of the society’s inception. This recognition was well deserved, however, for he had recently been appointed Director of the Minneapolis School of Art and had strong personal ties to Kansas as well.

Kopietz was born on April 9, 1900 in Everest, Kansas, and grew up in Wichita. His interest in art was encouraged by his high school art teacher.

C.A. Seward offered support to the young artist and gave Kopietz his first assignments as a free lance artist. He also introduced Edmund to a number of Wichita artists.

In 1920, through the assistance of Ed Davidson, Kopietz left Wichita to attend the Chicago Art Institute. After three years at the Institute he was offered a part-time teaching position while he continued his studies. In 1928 he joined the staff of the Minneapolis School of Art and moved to Minnesota. The following year he was named Director of the school. He retired from the school in 1950 and maintained his own studio and free lance services for a number of companies in Minneapolis.

Kopietz produced only a small number of prints, apparently all lithographs created during his early years of his career. His primary work as an artist has been as a painter. His favorite medium was watercolor.

He did not actively participate in the Prairie Print Makers after its initial stages.

Although he did maintain an interest and appreciation for the work of the Society. He felt honored by his charter membership, but in truth felt he might at best be considered honorary.

He died October 5, 1988 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the age of 88 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Wichita.
