This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Oakland, CA on June 7, 1907. Elizabeth Bakewell's parents were residents of Santa Barbara at the time of her birth. The family were descendants of pilgrims John and Priscilla Alden and of John Sevier, first governor of Tennessee. Upon returning to Santa Barbara, she spent the remainder of her life there. Her most active period as an artist was prior to her marriage to artist Joseph E. Knowles in 1935. After that time, she did portraiture and her final years were devoted to scenic design for local theater and opera. Her work includes landscapes and portraits in oil, watercolor, and charcoal. Mrs. Knowles died at her home in Santa Barbara on Oct. 29, 1964.
