Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Elizabeth Keith was born in Scotland and was a self-taught artist. Her sister married a publisher who worked in Tokyo, and Elizabeth went to visit there in 1915 for an intended short holiday.  She stayed to study woodblock printing however and two years later started to publish her first colour woodblock prints with some success.

She undoubtedly fell under the influence of the American artist Helen Hyde who was working in Japan at the time.  Keith traveled throughout East Asia and produced a large body of work on oriental subjects. They were well received in the United States and Britain.

It was not until 1924 that she returned to Britain but in the early 1930s she was again back in the east and she stayed and worked there until just before the Second World War.
