| Born in April 1852 in Illinois. Knott painted in the Rocky Mountains in the late 1870s. About 1910 he moved to southern California and settled in Santa Barbara. While based there, he traveled widely in search of subject matter. His autochrome pictures appeared in national magazines. In 1927 he returned from a 40,000 mile trip through the Orient as an explorer for the Nat’l Geographic Society, bringing back thousands of color photos of previously undocumented subjects. Knott died in Santa Barbara on Aug. 6, 1930.
