Frederic C. Knight was born in Philadelphia in 1898 and lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania most of his life.
At the age of 14, in February 1913, he placed first in a city-wide drawing contest, with an Abraham Lincoln pen drawing. He was recommended for a state scholarship to the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia. He won the top graduation honors for general excellence and for drawing. Knight subsequently started teaching at the school.
