| | Born in Düsseldorf, Germany on Oct. 31, 1843. Kruell studied art in his native city and under Robert Brendamour. In 1881 he organized and served as first president of the American Wood Engravers' Society. He became famous for his portraits of noted Americans. He died in San Luis Obispo, CA on Jan. 2, 1907.
