A sculptor and medal designer, Kreis was born in 1899 in Essen, Germany. After high school, he became an apprentice to a stone carver, and later studied at the State School of Applied Arts in Munich. In 1933, he immigrated to the U.S., studying at the Beaux Arts Institute of Design and later with Paul Manship, while earning a living as a stone cutter. Kreis was WPA artist during the Depression, and served as a faculty member of the Hartford Art School (Connecticut).
