Born in Philadelphia, Herbert Kallem spent most of his career in New York City where he was active as a sculptor and art teacher at the School of Visual Arts and New York University. He studied at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, and the Hans Hofmann School. Exhibition venues included the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Carnegie Institute.
He was a member of the Sculptors Guild, which he served as President from 1974 to 1976.
