| | Born in Arizona on Feb. 22, 1917. Kobashigawa moved to Okinawa with his family as a young boy. At 16 he returned to the U.S. and settled in Los Angeles. While working as a gardener, he studied at the Otis Art Institute. At the outbreak of WWII he was interned at Manzanar and Tule Lake. While in the camps, he painted prolifically. After his release in 1946, he settled in NYC where he continued his art studies at the ASL.
