Biography from The Auction Room:
Jeffar Khaldi incorporates his personal experiences and rich cultural background into his artworks, which often reflect upon his native Palestine.  Khaldi’s childhood was spent amidst the chaotic climate of the Lebanese Civil war, in his teens he was forced to seek asylum in the United States to avoid joining the national front line military which was engaged in war.

Khaldi creates a pseudo-fantasy world which is reminiscent of his personal experiences of isolation, historical and political events or cultural nostalgia.   Once a graffiti artist in downtown Dallas, Khaldi has since matured his style and technique, responding to his surroundings with the utmost control and dexterity. His work displays a variety of influences such as Pop, Expressionism, and Arabic calligraphy so creating an eerily warped style that is unique and distinctive. Alongside these modern influences, Khaldi also references ancient Persian miniature painting as an inspiration.  Despite the size able scale in which he works, the geometry employed in his compositions, his extraordinary attention to detail and the flattened sense of space make his work unique amongst contemporary art produced from the region.

Khaldi often highlights the paradoxical cultures of the East and West in his works, both of which Khaldi has inhabited and observed.  He explores their contradictory relationship and the inconsistencies between their historical heritage and current reality.   Part of Khaldi’s search for topics of influence involves concentrated research relating to arbitrary events in Palestine.  Despite not recognizing himself as an exclusively political artist, Khaldi acknowledges his responsibility to portray current topical subjects.  His works expose the irrationalities and injustice of the occupation of Palestine by combining sharp political satire and fantastical dream-like imagery, therefore posing subversive questions to authoritative figures and querying the stereotypes and social ‘norms’ which shape current beliefs, and previously dominant views.
