| The following, submitted April 2004, is from the artist.
Jo Neace Krause was born in eastern Kentucky, in Breathitt County near Hazard, in l936. She attended Ohio State University, and won a creative artist fellowship in New York.
She was married to John Thomas Krause, a historian, and professor at State University of New York at Buffalo, until his death in l976. She lives in rural West Virginia. Paintings by Jo Neace Krause are in the collection of the Folk Art Museum of the University of Kentucky at Morehead, Kentucky.
Krause is also a writer whose poems and short stories have appeared in various academic journals such as the Yale Review, Other Voices, River City, and Exquisite Corpse. Her poem, "In Hazard, Kentucky in l942," originally published by South Carolina Review, is permanently on the web site of that city. In 2006 she won the Ontario Literary Prize for her collected short stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- In 2004, the Kentucky Folk Art Center acquired work by Jo Neace Krause. The Center's website had this about her work: "Jo Neace Krause's oil paintings are wonderful portraits and landscapes of Appalachian scenes and people. Her work displays extraordinary skill and emotional depth, especially when considering that Ms. Krause has only been painting for two years. She is a native of Breathitt Co., and currently resides in Weston, W.Va."

Jo Neace Krause is a writer as well as a painter. Her new poem, "Bird Wing, West Virginia", appeared in Mavarick, on-line version, Spring 20Ol. And a short story, "The Good In Men", appeared in Witness Magazine. Her short story, The Last Game We Played, was in Exquisite Corpse, June 2001.
