Joel Blakeslee Knapp, born in New York, is noted as the first portrait artist to reside in Hawaii. Due to the demand for likenesses at that time in Hawaii, he did probably several dozen portraits during his stay of almost two years in the islands. Apart from a few done in California after he left Honolulu, Knapp's entire body of work consists of portraits of missionaries and members of the Hawaiian royal family, including one of Prince Lunalilo.
It is not known where he received artistic (showing 500 of 2168 characters). |
