The following was submitted August 2005 by Richard West, Author of Satire on Stone: The Political Cartoons of Joseph Keppler (University of Illinois Press, 1988)

Often Known for: cartoon-caricature
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts (Vienna, 1852-55)
Employed as a painter and actor (1850s-1867)
Emigrated to St. Louis, where he co-founded and illustrated Die Vehme (1869-1870) and Puck (1871-1872). Also worked for Unser Blatt (1872-73).
Moved to New York and worked for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper (1873-1876).
Co-founded and was art director of Puck (1877-1894).
Was considered the successor to Thomas Nast and one of the greatest political cartoonists of the 19th century.
