|This biography from the Archives of AskART:|
|My younger brother, Joseph S. Konopka, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 6, 1932. Our family moved to Jersey City, NJ, in 1939, where an Uncle recognized his interest and abilities in painting. He supported him with an appreciation of his talents, and gave him gifts of the precious art supplies he needed.|
His first "commission" was from his grammar school classmates, a painting of an Indian on a horse, overlooking a mountain scene. It became a gift of the 8th grade graduating class to the school.
Joseph graduated from Cooper Union Art School, New York, NY in June 1954. He also attended Columbia University, New York, NY for a year, where he studied under Woodman Thompson, a famous Broadway set designer.
Since 1955 he has worked for NBCTV as a Scenic Artist, his time there interrupted only by the draft into the US Army, where his special talents were immediately recognized and he was assigned to make illustrations for charts and books in the Department of Training Publications. For sixteen months he was reassigned to the Office of the Military Aide to the President in the White House, where he did hand lettering, script and calligraphy for invitations, cards, testimonials and other White House social occasions.
Konopka is still with NBCTV, where for fifty years he has worked as a Scenic Artist in studios and theaters and other locations where TV shows were broadcast. He painted sets and built props for the Today Show, the Tonight Show (with Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, David Letterman), NBC Operas, Hallmark Hall of Fame, Philco Theater, Kraft Music Shows, Soap Operas, Election Reports, News Shows, the Moon Landing, the Apollo Space Shows, the Miss America festivities in Atlantic City, and many other NBCTV productions. Presently, he works for the Late Night Show with Conan O'Brien.
During his nights and weekends Konopka is a prolific painter. In his early adult years he passionately painted his wife, Casey, in her daily routines and activities with the scenes and landscapes of New Jersey as her background.
He painted a series of views from the top of the World Trade Center, 26 portraits of people he met in the Art World, portraits of the children in his extended family, a series of tall ships during the 1976 Bicentennial Celebrations, a series of lighthouses, scenes of the shore and the highways and byways of New Jersey.
Konopka works in acrylics, watercolor, pencil and pen and ink drawings. He presents the solitary figure in a landscape. He is a realist painter of landscapes, cityscapes and portraits, and his colors are delicate, muted, soft and gentle, yet sharp at the same time.
His works are in 174 Museums, Historical Societies and Collections in the United States, Puerto Rico, Poland, Vatican City, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. He has had 19 one-man exhibits and has been in 85 group exhibits.
Konopka is a member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829, New York, NY.
He was a member of the Associated Artists of New Jersey and was Vice President from 1976 to 1985. He is listed in "Who's Who in American Art".
Konopka paints in the studio of his Victorian home in Glen Ridge, New Jersey.
