Margaret Kidder
(American, 1904 – 1959)

A California painter, etcher and lithographer Margaret Kidder exhibited her art throughout the state and at annual California Printmakers expositions from approximately 1935 to 1955. She was particularly active in the Pasadena area and it is believed she resided there.

Margaret Kidder's art is almost entirely dedicated to depictions of the Madonna and Child or of women and young children in general. Her etchings and engravings, in particular, bear affinities to the techniques of Renaissance masters, such as in the handling of the backgrounds. The women, however, are clearly contemporary.

This, combined with the spirituality of her subjects, creates an 'other world' quality to her art. The Library of Congress, Washington, DC, and the San Francisco Museums of Fine Arts include examples of Margaret Kidder's etchings in their permanent collections.
