Biography from Southwest Gallery:
Mary Kay Krell grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a university town.  She was raised in a musical family and became interested in the arts at an early age.  Her major at the University of Michigan School of Architecture and Design was in painting and printmaking.  In a work-study program during her college years she learned graphic skills and has held several positions as a graphic artist.  These jobs were intermingled with raising a family, moving several times, and dabbling in acrylics and pen and ink illustrations.

After a move to Minnesota in 1985, Krell began painting seriously in watercolor, and
began experimenting with oils in 1998.  She has developed a representational style characterized by softness, delicacy, luminosity, and meticulous preoccupation with color and texture.  Her subject matter is botanical; either nursery and garden scenes or still life with flowers, with special attention given to the structure and color balance of the piece.  She regularly exhibits with watercolor societies, and has seen her work published as prints, calendars, and greeting cards.

In addition to awards in graphic design for university publications, she has won awards
in several regional art groups including the Southwest Watercolor Society, the Society of Watercolor Artists of Ft. Worth, and the Mid-Cities Trinity Arts Guild.   She has been the subject of the feature article in the October 1991 issue of The Artists' Magazine, as well as a finalist in the magazine's 1994 and 1995 all media competitions.

Krell won merchandise awards in the Society of Watercolor Artists of Ft. Worth 1994 and 1995 juried shows.  Her work has been included in Northern Light Books Splash III: Ideas and Inspirations, 1994, Fresh Flowers, 1996, and Splash VII, 2002.  Krell has also been an active member of the Southwest Watercolor Society, and won Best of Show in the 1997 Annual Exhibition.
