The following, submitted September 2005, is from Luise Kaish, artist and wife of Morton Kaish.


Morton Kaish earned his BFA degree at Syracuse University. He continued his studies at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, the Istituto d'Arte in Florence and the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome. In 1989 he received Syracuse University's Distinguished Alumni Award For Achievement in the Fine Arts.

His work is included in a number of public, private, university and corporate collections. Among museum collections are The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Museum of Art Smithsonian Institution, The Brooklyn Museum, The Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, The New Britain Museum of American Art, The Newark Museum, The Butler Institute of American Art, Guild Hall, The British Museum, and The Fitzwilliam Museum.

He has been Visiting Artist at Boston University, Columbia University, Queens College, Philadelphia College of Art, The School of Visual Arts and The Parsons School of Design.

He has served as Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth College and The University of Washington as well as on the faculties of the New School and The Art Students League of New York. He has been appointed Faculty Exchange Scholar of the State University of New York and is a professor in the School of Art and Design at FIT/SUNY.

Morton Kaish has been awarded a New York State Research Grant for work in experimental media. Elected to The National Academy of Design in 1988, he has been awarded The Andrew Carnegie Prize, The Benjamin Altman Landscape Prize, and The Gervasi Award for Painting. He also received the William A. Paton Award, The Obrig Prize for Watercolor and twice received The William Ward Ranger Purchase Fund Award.

Morton Kaish was born on January 8, 1927 in Newark, New Jersey. He studied at Syracuse University where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, at Academy Chaumiere in Paris and Institute d'Arte, Florence. He taught at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, and Dartmouth and Columbia University.

Kaish had a life-long fascination with the American Civil War and painted a series of paintings that defined a moment in the history of the country that is associated with struggle, loss and ultimate triumph.
