| Emigrating from England in 1793, Nicholas King established a reputation as a cartographer, surveyor, draftsman and artist. He first lived in New York City and then moved to Philadelphia where he stayed from 1794 to 1796. From 1796 to 1803, he lived in Washington DC. where he was appointed as the first surveyor in 1803.
He died at the height of his career in 1812.
