| | Born in Frankfort, Germany in 1837. By 1865 Kaltschmidt had established a studio in San Francisco. Working in watercolor and oil, he painted portraits, Indian subjects, historical genre, still lifes of fruit, and over-sized (4' to 5') canvases of Fort Point, Mount Hood, Sacramento River, and European scenes. He was active locally until the earthquake and fire in 1906. Most of his paintings and photographs went up in flames, making any extant works rare. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1864-96; Calif.
