Per Kirkeby was born in Denmark in 1939. He was a practicing geologist participating in expeditions to the west coast of Greenland. He went on to produce sculpture, make documentary and experimental films and write some sixty books, including poetry, essays and novels, but despite all this activity he has always considered himself primarily a painter.
In the early 1960s Kirkeby became an active member of the Experimental Art School in Copenhagen. At the same time he began to paint on masonite which allowed him greater scope in manipulating his work.
