| | Born in North Carolina on Jan. 13, 1850. At age 11 Kersey moved to Richmond, IN with his family. During the 1860s he was a school teacher in nearby Newport. Due to ill health he moved to the milder climate of California in 1869 and remained until his demise in San Diego in 1873. | Source:
