Biography from AskART:
| The following information is from Cindy Fuller, who has done extensive research on this artist:
Robert Kluth (1854-1921), Marine and Landscape Painter
Born: 1854, Mecklenburg, Germany, immigrated to the U.S. in 1861 (Deutsche Kuenstler in America cites a birth date of December 7, 1853) Died: September 23, 1921, Brooklyn, New York Interred: September 25, 1921, The Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery (Lot 7670) Studied: U.S, (New York, Philadelphia) Germany, Norway Resided: Brooklyn, New York Addresses: 1880-1887: 400 Grand Street, Brooklyn 1888-1890: 79 Maujer Street, Brooklyn 1890-1906 277 Koscuisko Street, Brooklyn 1918-1920: 4204 Ave. Q, Flatbush Gardens Wife: Frances Embree Kluth Son: Charles R. Kluth (A Realty Broker in Brooklyn) Sister: Mrs. Jerome R. Reimers, Washington, D.C.
Memberships: Founding Member of the Brooklyn Society of Artists (member 1918-1920) Ridgewood Council, #678, Royal Arcanum
After growing up in Fishkill-on-the Hudson, he studied art in the U.S. and abroad, specializing in landscapes and marines. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, and in major cities around the country.
He was active in Philadephia, as well, but lived most of his adult life in New York City. Starting out with lithography (one of his early lithographs is a racehorse published by Currier & Ives in 1872), he used the money saved to study abroad, wher he began painting landscapes, still-lives and interiors with figures. Andrew Carnegie was later so taken by his Norwegian fjord scenes, that he bought many of these paintings for public libraries and museums.
Lithograph: “Celebrated Trotting Horse Henry, Driven by John Murphy: As He Appeared at Prospect Park, L.I. June 27th 1872, in His Trot with Goldsmith Maid and Lucy.” Published: 1872 Currier & Ives. Artist: R. Kluth (signature is shown on the image). Measurements: 9.4” x 14.6" (across the image, not the paper), and was a black and white vignette. Note:Dr. Scott Currier of the Currier & Ives Foundation supplied the above information. Note: Additional assistance from Dr. James Brust and Ms. Georgia B. Barnhill of the American Antiquarian Society lead me to the Library of Congress where the above referenced print is on file.

**NOTE: The 1st Prize Fund Exhibition was held in 1885 under the auspices of The American Art Association. I find no record of them continuing after the 5th Prize Fund Exhibition in 1889. In 1887, 1888 and possibly 1889 Andrew Carnegie was a subscriber to these Exhibitions. This is the first connection I have found between Robert C. Kluth and Andrew Carnegie.

Correspondence from the National Academy of Design: December 3, 2002 from Mr. David Dearinger, Chief Curator:
“Robert Kluth was not a member of the Academy nor do I find him registered in the Academy school. The student body, which, by definition, consists of amateurs or artists-in-training, would not be eligible for membership in the Academy, which is an honorary organization of mature, professional artists who have achieved a level of success. Nor are all exhibitors at the Academy necessarily members. Until 1983, all the Academy's juried exhibitions were open for submission by any and all artists, but works did (and do) had to pass a strict jury. Therefore, for an artist to be admitted to these shows was a huge honor, especially in the 19th century, and helped to get many artists started on their careers.”

Biography from AskART:
| OBITS:
BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE:
ROBERT KLUTH, NOTED MARINE ARTIST, DIES
Paintings Bought by Carnegie for Libraries and Museums.
Robert
Kluth, a widely known marine and landscape painter, many of whose
paintings of Norwegian fjord scenes were purchased by the late Andrew
Carnegie for public libraries and museums, died suddenly yesterday, of
a stroke, at his residence, 4204 Avenue Q, Flatbush Gardens. He had
been suffering from heart trouble for some time.
Mr. Kluth was
born in Germany in 1854 and came to this country when he was 7 years
old. He spent his boyhood days at Fishkill-on-the Hudson, and after
studying art in this country, spent several years studying under
professors at Dusseldorf, Germany, and in Norway. He specialized in
landscapes and marines, and had exhibited his paintings at the National
Academy of Design in Manhattan, in the Philadelphia Academy of Fine
Arts and at exhibitions in the larger cities throughout the country.
Andrew Carnegie was especially fond of his Norwegian fjord scenes and
was one of the first to recognize their full merit.
Mr. Kluth
lived in Brooklyn most of his lifetime. He was an active member of the
Brooklyn Society of Artists, and a member of Ridgewood Council, No.
678, Royal Arcanum. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Embree
Kluth; a son, Charles R. Kluth, a realty broker of Brooklyn, and a
sister, Mrs. Jerome R. Reimers of Washington, D.C.
The funeral
services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at Mr.
Kluth's late home, conducted by the Rev. Charles William Roeder, pastor
of the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church, and the Interment will follow
in the Lutheran Cemetery.
BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE: ART CRITIC TELLS OF KLUTH'S WORK:
Robert
C. Kluth, the Brooklyn artist who died suddenly at his home, 4202
Avenue Q, on Thursday, will be buried from his late residence today at
2 o'clock.
Robert Kluth was born in Macklenburg-Schwerin,
Germany in 1854. His parents came to America in 1861. In the early
seventies he returned to Europe and studied at Dusseldorf and spent
much time in Norway sketching. Before going to Europe to study he
worked at lithography. Among those early lithographs is a racehorse
published by Currier & Ives in 1872. Lithography, however, was
considered by Mr. Kluth a mere means of attaining his end the getting
together of the necessary funds for studying abroad. Interesting as his
lithographs are, they have not the individuality of his later work.
Mr.
Kluth's paintings may be divided into three classes the landscapes
which often contain sheep: the still-lifes and the interiors with
figures. Many of his landscapes are of the Norway fjords from sketches,
which he made there in the seventies. The sketches are very solidly
painted and afforded an excellent foundation upon which to build his
art.
Mr. Kluth felt that the practice of painting still-lifes
was an important aid to the artist's technical training. He continued
painting them throughout his life, and with the past year or two he has
painted canvases of the familiar bowls and jugs and fruit which have
been the standard subjects of the still-life painter since the time of
Chardin. The interiors with figures are true pictures of American life
of today. One represents the modern kitchen with its stove and washtubs
with the family at the table and the cat and kittens playing on the
floor.
Robert Kluth was one of the founders of the Brooklyn
Society of Artists. Brooklyn has lost one of its most important
painters who was not only admired for his art but also for his
qualities as a man. Hamilton Easter Field.
