Born in Balta, Russia, Roman Kryzanovsky became a distinguished portraitist in Detroit, Michigan, where he settled in 1910. He taught briefly at the University of Michigan from 1918 to 1919 and gave many classes from his studio in Detroit. There he was one of the founders of the Scarab Club.
He was the son of a Polish nobleman and received his early art training in Leningrad, Russia and later at the Academie Colarossi in Paris. There he also studied with Auguste Renoir, Alphonse Mucha, and Fritz Thaulow.
