| Known as a portraitist and miniaturist and as the teacher of Gilbert Stuart, Samuel King was born in Newport, Rhode Island and remained there during his career except for a brief period in Salem, Massachusetts in 1771 and 1772.
Other students of Samuel King who became well known are Edward Greene Malbone, Washington Allston and Charles Bird King.
