Born in Hanford, California in 1901, Mr. Knowles graduated from UC Berkeley in 1921. He then attended the San Francisco School of Fine Art and on scholarship at the ASL of New York City. During the late 1920’s and early 1930’s he honed his impressionist skills while traveling throughout Mexico and later residing in Haiti where he attended a voodoo ceremony that kindled a deep fascination that resulted in a remarkable series gouache and scratchboard works depicting the native ceremonies.
