Born in Stavanger, Norway on Sept. 25, 1859, William Kirkgaard studied at the Technical Art School in Stockholm. He came to the U.S. in 1886 and further studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in New York City.
Until 1893 he was a resident of San Jose, California, and then settled in Los Angeles on a small ranch where Manual Arts High School now stands. In the 1920s he moved nearby into a studio-home in Altadena and continued portrait commissions until failing eyesig (showing 500 of 1196 characters). |
