Alexander O. Levy (American, 1881-1947) Western New York artist, painter, illustrator, printmaker and book designer.  At age three, he was brought to Cincinnati, Ohio, and he later moved to Buffalo, New York, where he was an illustrator, commercial artist, and painter.

1881- Born in Bonn, Germany.

1894-1900- Studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, OH, with Frank Duveneck.

1902-03- Studied at the New York School of Fine And Applied Art, NYC with Ossip Linde, William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri.

1909- Moved to Buffalo, NY, worked as an illustrator, commercial artist & painter.

1913- Art Director of the Larkin Company Buffalo, NY and began designing the color covers to their catalogs and did the Company's 50th Anniversary booklet.

1920-23- Exhibited, Cincinnati Art Museum, OH, Society of Independent Artists, NYC.

1922-23- Exhibited, Salons of America, NYC.

1922-24- Exhibited, Buffalo Society of Artists (Prize), Buffalo, NY.

1925- Exhibited, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia, PA.

1925-46- Exhibited, Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY.

1935- Exhibited, Buffalo Society of Artists, Buffalo, NY.

1937-38- Exhibited, Buffalo Society of Artists, Buffalo, NY.

1947- Died, Buffalo, NY.

Exhibited annually at the Rundel Gallery, Rochester, NY.

Born in Bonn, Germany, Alexander Oscar Levy studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duveneck and at the New York School of Fine Art with William M. Chase and Robert Henri.

A member of the Buffalo Society of Art, the Society for Sanity in Art, and the Salmagundi Club, he exhibited at the Salons of America (1922-23), Society of Independent Artists (1920-23), Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1925), Albright Art Gallery (1925-46), Rundel Art Gallery, Rochester, NY (annually), and the Buffalo Society of Art (1922-24, 1935, 1937-38).

His work is in the collections of the CM, Denver Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Peabody Institute, Baltimore, MD, Detroit Institute of Art and others.

Levy immigrated to Cincinnati, OH in 1884 and then moved to Buffalo, NY where he remained and worked as an illustrator, commercial artist and painter from 1909 on.

Biography from Shippee Fine Art:
Alexander O. Levy was a painter, illustrator, printmaker and designer who was born in 1881 in Bonn, Germany.  He died in 1946 in Buffalo, New York. At age three, he was brought to Cincinnati, Ohio, and he later moved to Buffalo, New York, where he was an illustrator, commercial artist, and painter.

He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duveneck, and studied with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri.  He was a member of the Buffalo Society for Sanity in Art and exhibited at the Salons of America, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Albright Art Gallery.
