Biography from Christie's New York, Rockefeller Center:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Benedetto Luti was employed by many of the leading Roman families of the day, including the Torri, Colonna, Pallavicini, Barberini, and Odescalchi, whilst also receiving the patronage of church leaders such as Pope Clement XI, Cardinal Ottoboni, Cardinal Augusto Fabbroni and Padre Cloche.

The artist was among the painters selected to decorate the nave arcade of San Giovanni in Laterano, the most important papal commission in the first quarter of the century, for which Luti, in 1718, contributed the figure of Isaiah to the series of oval prophets.

Although he never left Rome after his arrival in 1690, several of Luti's most celebrated works were executed for foreign nobility, notably Palatine Elector Johann Wilhelm (1658-1716) and Lothar Franz von Schönborn (1655-1729).  Following his commission from the latter to paint two works depicting Diana and Endymion and Venus and Adonis (1713) for Schloss Weissenstein at Pommersfelden, Lothar Franz ensured the artist was decorated by Emperor Charles VI as a Knight of the Empire.

Luti's work was also much sought after by English collectors; the finest examples of which are arguably the two grand-scale canvases (Christ and Mary Magdalen in the House of Simon and Cain and Abel) acquired in 1757 by the dealer William Kent for Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Lord Scarsdale (1726-1804), which now hang in the Drawing Room at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire (National Trust).
