This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Charles Luffman was born in London, England in 1909, and died in New Providence, New Jersey at the age of 78 in 1987.  He graduated from New York University in 1935 with a degree in electronics.  For 25 years he worked as an electronics engineer on the technical staff of Bell Laboratories in Whippany, New Jersey and New York City.

He was a member of the American,  New Jersey, and Baltimore Watercolor societies with works in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Fairbanks Museum in Vermont, and The Newark Museum and the Newark Public Library.

Luffman wrote articles that were published in American Arts Magazine on travel and the technique of 19th-century landscape artists.  He also invented a method of testing tonal-valued paintings by using a cast shadow.
