Biography from Corcoran Fine Arts Ltd.:
David LaChapelle (American, b. 1964)

After attending the North Carolina School of the Arts and the School of Visual Arts in New York, David LaChapelle began his career in photography working for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, and he took some of the last known photographs of Warhol.  LaChapelle’s photographs tend to be outrageous and surreal and are often risqué, as demonstrated by this photograph of Eminem.

Celebrities are a common subject matter for LaChapelle, and he has taken iconic photographs of many famous figures including Pamela Anderson, Sean Combs, Quentin Tarantino, Angelina Jolie, Naomi Campbell, Elton John, Drew Barrymore, Lance Armstrong, David Beckham, and Eminem.  His celebrity photographs have appeared in magazines such as Gentlemen’s Quarterly, Vogue, The London Sunday Times, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair.

LaChapelle is also a highly sought after music video director; he has created videos for Elton John, Mariah Carey, Moby, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston, and Hillary Duff.   In addition to his photography and music video direction, LaChapelle has directed advertisements for Diesel, Burger King, H&M, Nokia, L’Oreal, and Tommy Hilfiger.  LaChapelle’s Rize, a documentary film about urban dancing in Los Angeles, premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and received much critical praise.
