The following was submitted March 2004 by the artist, living and working in San Francisco, California:

Born in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, Derek Lynch was educated at North Hunterdon High and went on to New York's Art Students League and then School of Visual Arts in 1976.

With a Loft Studio on Canal Street in New York, he had mentors including Frank Owen who introduced him to many of New York's 1970s Soho and Tribeca artists. Another friend and mentor at the time, John Seery, gave him inspiration for his gesture work at the time. John introduced him to Magoo's a Tribeca artist hang-out, Mr. Magoo collected art and hung the work in the restaurant for trade, Lynch was part of the collection along with Sol Lewitt, Jeff Koons, and others.

From 1982-1985, he was married to artist Claire Libin. In 1997 he moved to San Francisco were he continues to paint at Hunters Point Shipyard.

His technique is using thick layers of paint and moldings, layered on a canvas.
