Biography from Coleman Fine Art:
Earl Bradley Lewis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Realizing his artistic promise, two uncles, who were artists, encouraged him to pursue art training by enrolling him in an art program at the Temple University School Art League while in grade school. Under the tutelage of Clarence Wood, a noted painter in Philadelphia, Lewis began his formal art training. He remained in the program until enrolling in the Temple University Tyler School of Art in 1975.

During his four years at Temple, Lewis majored in graphic design and illustration, along with art education. There he discovered his medium of preference, watercolor and notes that he was greatly influenced by the work of Homer and George Inness.

Upon graduation in 1979, Lewis went directly into teaching, along with freelancing in graphic design and painting. His award-winning watercolors have been exhibited nationally, and sold out, in prestigious galleries since 1985. Lewis‚ successful segue into children‚s book illustrations started after a cover story on him in 1993 in "The Artist's Magazine".

Lewis is strongly drawn to the light and the effects it has on the natural landscapes of Charleston. The sharp, crisp, brushwork for which he is known expertly conveys a sense of depth, shadow and light, and pattern and texture. He captures fleeting moments of nature with an honesty that cannot be reproduced on film. His distinctive palette of earthy browns, greens, and grays underscores the peaceful, tranquil mood of the area that he most enjoys.

A very disciplined personality, Lewis divides his time between teaching at the Philadelphia University of Fine Art, painting, and illustrating children‚s books. He approaches every task with focus and determination, which has brought him recognition and respect in each area.

Lewis‚ work is now a part of major private collections and is displayed in galleries throughout the United States. For three consecutive years, he has been awarded the Coretta Scott King Honor award for his illustrations. He is presently on the Board of the Philadelphia Watercolor Club and continues to teach.
